Planning for The Next Regatta

Planning for the next PGYC Regatta with Magayon II

The renovation of Magayon II is progressing well, we just have a small Super Typhoon (Carina) passing by and putting all works on hold. Currently the conversion to electric motor is ongoing (we will still be able to use a gasoline motor for longer trips). By the end of the month she should be ready for sailing.

Time to make new plans. We think it is a good idea to participate in a Puerto Galera Yacht Club regatta again, for the fun, and to stay connected with the PGYC crowd, and because it looks like a nice travel project. This would be done in three phases and would take around two weeks:

  1. Around four days from Subic to Puerto Galera. If we want to avoid using the motor add one day, at least.
  2. Three days participating in the Regatta, and keeping the tradition of winning alive!
  3. Around 4-5 days from Puerto Galera back to Subic.

Our first race and the first win, first price overall (3 days), we also won the multihull class.

So around 11-13 days of sailing, we are looking for crew, parts of the trip are also possible.

Also a good opportunity to do some vacation in Mindoro.

For the regattas there are two options:

  • The All Souls Regatta (usually with boats coming from abroad) is in November 1-3, 2024. There is enough time but it may be short notice for crew who want to come abroad. .
  • The PGYC Easter Regatta next year (not yet announced, poster below is from this year) would leave ample time for planning and preparations. By then our young folks might also already have their big ship and could join with that too.

Below are a few pictures from previous regattas

It did not look like racing, but we were indeed
Raising sail before the start, Magayon II is usually the second boat to start, because she is sooo small. The ideas is that all boats reach the finish line at the same time to make an exciting finale. The challenge for us is to stay ahead of the pack.

Easter Regatta 2022: Hmmm…….
2022: Well ahead around the island, but a monohull chasing us. And how the heck did that ship end up on the beach of the resort?
2022: Wharam Tiki 46 Naya anchored in the Puerto Galera Bay. Little did we know that two years later we would surround Mindoro around on her.

Christmas Regatta 2020, while Martin was in charge with the boat….

…the crew had to swim to the shore at White Beach, order a drink at a certain bar, and then bring back the receipt to qualify for the finish….
… which ended up quite messy close to the finish line.
