A Wharram Tiki26, ideal for coastal cruising in the Philippines
With a heavy heart we are selling Magayon II
Magayon II is part of the family, and we had many great adventures on her. One of them, totally unexpected, was winning the Puerto Galera Yacht Club Easter Regatta 2018 on her and we also came in first or second in many races in succeeding Easter and All Souls Regattas of the club. She also instilled the desire in our kids to spend part of their lives on sailing boats. So why sell? A wise man once told me that when you turn 60 with every succeeding year of age the boat one owns should be a bit bigger for added comfort to compensate for the effects of aging. I found out that there is some truth to it. In addition, due to changed lifestyle we are exploring getting a bigger boat for more comfortable cruising, considering that most of our more senior cruising guests are not necessarily into the more action oriented “nautical camping” lifestyle on Magayon II.
Magayon II
Magayon II was build using the Wharram Tiki 26 Building Plans – No 407. The raw hulls and the initial wood mast were built by Andy Smith’s Junction Boat Works in Paglao, Bohol. Junction Boat Works is an accredited Wharram builder. Cockpit, cross beams, motor bracket, all the interior, electrics, fresh water system, audio system, rigs and fittings were build and completed by us. Sails and trampoline were custom made by Hyde Sales in Cebu: Most fittings were imported from SVB, Gemany. Two modifications were made over time:
- The original wooden mast, which was extremely heavy, was replaced with an aluminum mast, using an aluminum tube specially made at CALCO, but that is another story.
- The canvass seats were replaced with wooden seats. The starboard seat has two storage bunks and a gasoline tank built in.

Why a Wharram Tiki 26
The Tiki 26 is the perfect vessel for coastal cruising and “nautical camping“, and for weekend outings. The boat is easy to handle, comfortable, and is fast. Hull speed is around 6.4 knots, when surfing on waves we sometimes reached 8 knots. Its little draft of only 0.4 m is ideal for the often shallow waters along the coastlines of the Philippines. Its ocean-going capabilities have been demonstrated on various crossings. Compared to a monohull it provides lots of outdoor living space for its size. It can be also easily beached and can enter shallow river mounds. It has space to sleep two people in each hull, with additional space on the deck. The Tiki 26 can be dismantled in half a day and can be transported with a trailer (if wanted it can be added at some extra price).

The Tiki26 is designed for homebuilders and uses as little as possible expensive fittings. One example are the rudder hinges, which are made from ropes and not steel. They are extremely stable, don’t rust and if they at some point are worn out, can be easily replaced with local materials. We followed this philosophy as much as possible, meaning that everything can be repaired locally at low cost. Magayon is therefore extremely easy and cheap to maintain.
